So many things can be said about Luis Barragán house. One could mention that it is the only individual property in all of Latin America to be acknowledged as World Heritage by the UNESCO, or that it is of cultural value to know the residence of a world wide known architect, winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, who was in charge of modeling some of the most original buildings in Mexico. But everyone who has ever set foot on the house would agree that the most important reason to visit it is the aesthetic experience of walking trough it. It is a time capsule in the sense that everything remains the same as if Barragán was to walk through the door at any time, but it also possesses a dynamic character given by the innumerable details that it holds. New features show up upon a second glance as if the house was alive, and in a sense it is. A chamber might reveal a previously hidden window, and the proportions between walls shift as one walks by. It changes its moods through the day, as if many houses were contained in one.

Right next to it we can find Ortega house. It is the genesis of Barragán’s career as an architect. The discrete pathway and the elegant yet modern decoration speak of Barragán’s love for nature. A water mirror and a small building are carefully placed as to not disturb the peaceful harmony of an exuberant vegetation that seems to grow at will, creating the perfect match between natural and human work.

Giraldi house is just a couple of blocks away. It was Barragán’s last oeuvre, a sort of testament of what he thought –and how he felt– about architecture.
