Overview
Introduction
Sarteneja is a fishing village on the Shipstern Peninsula of Corozal District. Though still off the beaten path, it is beginning to attract both visitors and expats looking for a quieter and more unspoiled side of Belize.
Sarteneja, home to a small population of mostly Spanish-speaking lobstermen, anglers and boat builders, enjoys a beautiful waterside setting, with a few sailing sloops bobbing at anchor off the local piers. The village has only a handful of small inns and three or four restaurants with irregular hours. Beyond a visit to the nearby Shipstern Nature Preserve, the top activity is relaxing in a hammock with a cool drink and a good book.
Access by road from Corozal Town or Orange Walk Town takes about an hour and a half given the poor condition of the road. A water taxi between San Pedro and Corozal Town stops in Sarteneja on demand, as do some flights between Corozal and San Pedro.
