Llandeilo

Overview

Introduction

Llandeilo, Wales, is one of two historic market towns along the scenic Towy Valley. Llandeilo, along with neighboring Carmarthen, is considered among the most Welsh of towns in southern Wales.

The two towns don't have much in the way of tourist attractions, but either one makes a good base for exploring the hilly countryside of the area. Carreg Cennen Castle, 5 mi/8 km southeast of Llandeilo, is small but spectacular, standing on an isolated crag of rock in a magnificent rural setting.

The ruins of Dinefwr Castle, built in the 12th century, and Newton House are also worth visiting. You can try your hand at panning for gold at Dolaucothi Mine (12 mi/19 km northwest of Llandovery), which also makes a good base for exploring the Towy Valley, or explore the remains of Roman gold mines. Llandeilo is 66 mi/106 km northwest of Cardiff.
