Introduction
Even though its location 810 mi/1,300 km north of Vancouver is not exactly close to any of the province's most popular destinations, Kitwancool, British Columbia, is interesting for its wealth of indigenous cultures. The world's oldest standing totem pole (Hole-Through-the-Ice) is among the 23 totems in Kitwancool. Others can be found in nearby Gitwangak Reserve. 'Ksan Village, just outside New Hazelton, is one of the highlights of the region. It has a collection of seven indigenous longhouses that are living museums of Gitksan culture. 'Ksan is one of the few places that really provides insight into indigenous life before the arrival of Europeans. In Stewart (north of New Hazelton), there are excellent opportunities to view glaciers.
