Almeria, Spain

Overview

Introduction

Almeria is Andalucia's easternmost province, 250 mi/400 km southeast of Madrid. It is an extremely dry region with parts of it classified as true desert. Because of this, the area around Tabernas has been often used by European filmmakers as a stand-in for America's Wild West.

The capital city of Almeria has an impressive cathedral and even more impressive Arab fortress, the Alcazaba.

The most scenic part of the province is the rugged Cabo de Gata headland, which has been declared a nature reserve, and whose clear waters provide some of the best scuba diving in the country.
