Middle Caicos

Overview

Introduction

Though Middle Caicos is the largest island in the Turks and Caicos, its population is fewer than 300 people. Located in the middle of the chain and connected to North Caicos by a causeway, Middle Caicos has Lucayan and Arawak sites under excavation at the towns of Bamberra and Lorimar.

It is said that Mudjin Harbour and Dragon Cay have the most beautiful view in all of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Spelunkers will enjoy some huge limestone caves and underground salt lakes, collectively called the Conch Bar Cave System, as well as the nearby Indian Cave. Snorkelers favor the shallow waters of Bambarra Beach, and divers head for Ocean Hole—sharks, rays and other large sea life regularly visit the 200-ft-/60-m-deep sinkhole south of the island.

Hikers love the 5-mi/8-km Crossing Place Trail that runs from Conch Bar to Crossing Place. If time permits, visit Big Pond, a nature park.

As with all the islands in Turks and Caicos, the best beaches tend to be on the north shore. Accommodations and dining are limited, and there is no public transport. Jeeps and 4x4 vehicles are the best way to explore the area.
