Colombia has a privileged geographical position in the northwestern corner of South America, bordered by the Caribbean Sea on the north side and the Pacific Ocean on the west side. Colombia has a wide range of climates and topography making it one of the most multi diverse countries in the world. It shares its borders with Panama, Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador. It also shares its maritime borders with Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Jamaica, Dominican Republic and Haiti. The territory is divided into a flat region to the east and the Andes Mountains to the west, with three ramifications. NATURE DESTINATIONS
AMACAYACU PARK: hiking through the trees, walk through the canopy suspension bridges, watch the pink and gray dolphin, and even get to visit a monkey island. Try a cuisine that combines the culture of three countries or learn how to decipher the forest through indigenous eyes.
Where? AMAZON: Located in the southern part of Colombia, it has two border points, sharing the Amazon jungle with Brazil and Peru. It houses 869 different bird species, 140 amphibians, 85 mammals, 147 reptiles, and 6,800 different plants.
TAYRONA NATIONAL NATURAL PARK: In the north of Colombia’s Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta, you will find a mountainous terrain that almost has an independent ecosystem. It is the highest mountain in the world that sits at the banks of a lake, with an area of 37,000 acres, of which 30,000 are land and 7,000 are marine. Enjoy ecotourism activities at the beaches that are naturally protected between the sea and the forest, filled with stunning landscapes that harbor 370 bird species.
ARVI PARK: Characterized as a natural reserve connected to the city of Medellin through the metro cable, a public transport system that was only possible by the social transformation of the region. It is a natural preserve initiative from a civil partnership of the conservation of the environment where you can enjoy guided tours that explain how simple actions can help preserve nature. Located in Antioquia, area is characterized for providing a great opportunity to see unique species and ecosystems due to its geographical diversity as weather patterns in Colombia are shaped by the height and seasons.
COCUY NATIONAL NATURAL PARK: Where visitors can enjoy mountain hiking, rock climbing at the Pulpito del Diablo (Devil’s Pulpit), trekking around the large green lagoons amid the moorland ecosystem. This is the favorite place for mountain climbers. Locate in Boyaca region, which has the largest variety of amphibians, birds, reptiles, plants and mammals in the country because it has all the ecosystems; from warm basins of major rivers, high altitude lagoons, temperate climatic zones, medium level altitudes, and moors.
COFFEE CULTURAL LANDSCAPE: In this region the smoothest and best coffee in the world is grown and harvested. For this reason it has become a coveted international destination for rural tourism: the coffee culture of the region is a world-renowned successful agribusiness industry, where Juan Valdez has become an emblematic figure. This region consists of the departments of Risaralda, Caldas, Quindio, and Norte del Valle and has been declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO for its beautiful coffee landscapes, biodiversity, and cultural richness.
LOS NEVADOS PARK: with 131,000 acres of nature reserve; hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and ice climbing are highly recommended. Visitors can experience numerous hikes among the green coffee plantations, horseback riding through waterfalls, listen to birds chirping on the background, fish peacefully nearby, go mountain biking, or visit neighboring towns. The National Coffee Park and Panaca Park promote local culture values and it is a fun experience for all ages. This area is characterized with the coffee culture where you will find the Otun Quimbaya Wildlife Sanctuary portrayed by its sub-Andean rainforest, where a variety of orchids and bromeliads are found. Also, you can go birdwatching of 300 different species, 3 of which are endemic. Spot spectacled bears and mountain tapirs.
CHOCO: The Choco rainforest is found at the Pacific Oceanfront. Its basins at the San Juan and Atrato rivers are on the list of those with the highest biodiversity in the world with 131,000 acres of reserve forest and nearly 400 bird species. Every year in this place, between June and November, you can admire beautiful humpback whales and sea turtles return to breed in Colombian waters from the migratory route of the South Pole.
UTRIA NATURAL PARK: a cove where the humpback whales come to give birth and where you can see for yourself the first flaps of the young calf. Take hikes through the tropical jungle.
