Samarai Island
Overview
Introduction
There's not much to see on this 60-acre/25-hectare island, although it is a nice place to walk around. Its main town (on the harbor), now small and sleepy, was once an important port before it was destroyed by the Japanese during World War II. You can reach Samarai by ferry from the mainland town of Alotau. Residents hold a pearl festival in November, which we enjoyed.
235 mi/375 km east of Port Moresby.
