Sweden's third-largest city, Malmo, is 325 mi/525 km southwest of Stockholm, at the nation's southern tip in the fertile Skane region. Thatch-roofed farmhouses dot the countryside around it, and summer visitors flock to Skane's white-sand beaches, especially on the eastern coast.
Malmo is just across the Oresund strait from Copenhagen, Denmark, and at the eastern end of the Oresund Bridge that links the two cities by road and rail. If you're arriving from Denmark and your schedule permits, stay one night to visit the Skane area.
Skane is featured in the crime novels of Swedish writer Henning Mankell. There are fantastic gardens and parks throughout the province, but the best is Wanas Sculpture Park in Knislinge, a 90-minute drive northeast of Malmo. Skane's most popular region is the southeastern corner, which includes picturesque Ystad (city of roses) and Kivik—best known for its apple orchards. The town of Glimmingehus boasts a well-preserved Nordic fortress and castle more than 500 years old.
The impressive Ale's Stones on the cliff above the sea at Kaseberg are Sweden's enigmatic equivalent of Stonehenge. Cows and tourists wander among erect stones in the formation of a Viking boat. Be sure to sample the smoked fish at shops near the parking lot.
