Kalambaka is located in central Greece about 170 mi/285 km northwest of Athens. It is the place to stay during a tour of the monasteries of Meteora.
Kalambaka has post-Byzantine churches and an 11th-century cathedral (with frescoes) that are worth exploring, but get out of the city, too: The surrounding countryside offers great views of the Thessalia Plain.
