Many eras of Midwestern history are on display in the southwest Indiana town of Evansville. Remnants of ancient residents are on view at Angel Mounds State Historic site, which features interactive exhibits about the people of the Middle Mississippian culture who inhabited this area 1100-1450.
Just across the river in Henderson, Kentucky, is the John J. Audubon Center; the naturalist and artist lived in the area 1810-19. Evansville Museum Transportation Center details the history of early river, rail, aviation and street transportation and includes a steam engine, club car and caboose from the early 1900s.
Downtown Evansville is also home to Tropicana Casino and its neighboring entertainment complex, which is filled with restaurants, nightclubs and other attractions.
The Ellis Park racetrack is just minutes from downtown Evansville in Henderson, Kentucky. Built in 1922 and owned by Churchill Downs, the track features Thoroughbred races several days a week July through Labor Day.
