This attractive park, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, is situated between Zagreb and Zadar. Considered a national treasure, the park boasts lush, forested mountain scenery and 12 upper and four lower aquamarine and sapphire-hued lakes connected by waterfalls.
It's one of the most beautiful national parks in Europe, covering approximately 115 sq mi/300 sq km, and numerous paths and wooden bridges make strolling a pleasant experience. Enter from the quieter north entrance where a moderate trail leads across the lakes to Veliki Slap (Big Falls), the tallest waterfall in the park.
Various tours to the lakes, which lie 75 mi/120 km southwest of Zagreb, can be arranged.
