Amorgos Island

Overview

Introduction

Amorgos became famous as the deep blue sea of the eponymous movie that was shot in 1988 at the beach Agia Anna. The visitor comes across a place made up of many different terrains: mountainous slopes with steep coasts and beautiful though inaccessible bays which give place to sandy beaches. The island has become somewhat more popular with the tourists in the last few years, but preserves its authentic character.

The most important sight of the island is the Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa, built in 1088 by Emperor Alexios. The monastery is literally built into the hollow of a vertical rock 300 meters above the sea. The view is breathtaking.
