Pentecost
Overview
Introduction
The world's original bungee jumpers, the residents of this island north of Efate are renowned for their displays of land diving, a sacred tradition now done mostly for the tourist trade (there is a charge for spectators). The divers climb to platforms at various levels on a wooden tower. They then tie vines to their ankles and jump headfirst into the air. The more experienced performers, who jump last, dive from as high as 85 ft/26 m. Events are usually scheduled once a week during the jumping season, April through early June. We recommend seeing the island as a day trip from Port Vila because the limited accommodations are spartan at best.
140 mi/220 km north of Efate.
