The elegantly restored Ohio River town of Paducah, in the western part of the state, calls itself "Quilt City USA"—quite a claim in a state filled with numerous talented artisans. It is one of seven UNESCO Cities of Crafts and Folk Art.
The main attraction is the Museum of the American Quilter's Society, which features a stunning collection of quilts, old and new (the modern ones reminded us of abstract paintings). A national quilt show and contest is held every April. The LowerTown Arts District is a center for potters, painters, jewelry makers and fiber artists, as well as the many visitors who go to see and shop.
Non-crafty types can continue down the road to Wickliffe Mounds, site of a prehistoric Native American village. Archaeologists have dug up homes, temple remains and burial mounds; there's a museum displaying their finds and explaining ongoing research.
