Located on the heel of Italy's boot, Brindisi played an important maritime role for the Romans, but it was originally an ancient Greek settlement.
Many visitors to Brindisi pass through en route to the ferry to either Greece or Albania. However, several fascinating churches, a couple of castles, the historic town center or a visit to the place where Roman poet Virgil died in 19 BC can help travelers enjoy the wait for the next ferry.
In particular, visit the 11th-century cathedral in the Piazza del Duomo, with its mosaics and bell tower, the Roman Column on Via Colonne, leading to the waterfront promenade, and the display at the Museo Archaeologico Provinciale Ribezzo in the Piazza del Duomo.
