Ruedesheim is a lively winemaking town on the Rhine River. It is tourist friendly and is a popular stop for Rhine River cruises. Visitors are usually transported into town on a small train, given a tour of Siegfried's Mechanical Music Museum—a collection of music boxes—and a taste of traditional Ruedesheim coffee, and then have the chance to explore the town on their own.
Also see nearby Presberg (a spa resort) and the 125-ft/38-m Niederwalddenkmal, topped by a huge Germania monument, commissioned by Otto von Bismarck to commemorate the 1871 unification of Germany.
Views from the monument are spectacular, but if you want to escape the crowds there, hike in the nature preserve north of it. In addition to more stunning vistas, the trails there feature castle ruins, a small zoo and buildings left from when the area was a royal hunting area in the 1800s.
Many boat trips through the Rhine Valley begin at Rudesheim.
Don't confuse Ruedesheim, which is sometimes called Ruedesheim am Rhein, with Ruedesheim an der Nahe, which is located on the Nahe River.
