Pula, Croatia, an Adriatic port near the southern tip of the Istria Peninsula, has decent beaches, a magnificent first-century Roman amphitheater, a number of other Roman ruins (temple, city gate and triumphal arch), a Byzantine cathedral and a 17th-century Venetian fort that houses the Historical Museum of Istria. Pula's well-preserved Roman amphitheater hosts a variety of cultural events, including a summer film festival and series of live concerts during the Summer Histria Festival.
Both independent and organized trips to Rovinj and the Brijuni Islands can be made from Pula, which is 125 mi/200 km southwest of Zagreb.
