On the River Shannon 110 mi/175 km southwest of Dublin and 15 mi/25 km east of Shannon, the ancient city of Limerick, Ireland, merits at least a day's visit.
For many visitors, it may be best known as the setting for writer Frank McCourt's searing memoir Angela's Ashes. Be sure to see King John's Castle and tower, the view from atop St. Mary's Cathedral and St. John's Square (note the old wall).
