Located 125 mi/200 km southwest of Amsterdam, Middelburg was a medieval cloth-making center and 17th-century trading port. The 16th-century Gothic town hall stands on the marktplein, and nearby is the Nieuwe Kerk with its abbey and tower.
Between Middelburg and Rotterdam is the Rhine and Maas delta area, sheltered from the North Sea by massive dikes of the "Delta Works," built after the disastrous flood of 1953 in which 1,800 lives were lost. To see how the dikes protect the area today, visit the Delta-Expo, about 10 mi/16 km north of Middelburg.
