Jodhpur, India, the city 300 mi/485 km southwest of Delhi that gave its name to riding breeches, is dominated by an imposing fort—considered by many to be the finest in Rajasthan—sitting atop a hill. Inside the citadel is a collection of buildings famed for their beautiful and colorful decorations—the Royal Harem is filled with extraordinary latticework. You're also likely to see snake charmers. Watch for the gate that's nearly covered with white handprints—marked by women as they exited the city on their way to throw themselves onto their husbands' funeral pyres. Jodhpur is commonly known as the "Blue City" for its many Brahmin-blue facades.
For a true taste of maharajah luxury, overnight in the Umaid Bhavan Palace. Half the palace has been turned into a hotel; the present maharajah of Jodhpur and his family inhabit the upper floors.
