Bikaner

Bikaner

Overview

Introduction

Called the Desert City, Bikaner, India, is stark yet beautiful, with great Hindu and Mughal art. Similar in setting to Jaisalmer, Bikaner is a walled city with an important 16th-century fort—Junagarh Fort—containing intricately carved palaces and temples. The fort, which was attacked repeatedly but never conquered, is remarkably well-preserved.

Located 240 mi/385 km west of Delhi, Bikaner has become a popular place from which tourists can book overnight camel safaris into the desert. It is also famous for bikaneri bhujia—a savory snack made from deep frying thin strings of spiced gram flour.
