Venilale
Overview
Introduction
Halfway between Baucau and Viqueque, Venilale is the birthplace of Jose Ramos-Horta—author and winner of the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to bring a peaceful end to the conflict in East Timor. It is famed for its convent, cathedral and colorful Escola de Reino de Venilale (Kingdom of Venilale School)—built in 1933 and newly restored.
