Robinson Crusoe Island is one of three islands in the Juan Fernandez archipelago located off the coast of Chile. In 1705, the sailor Alexander Selkirk – more famously known by the island that bears his name, was marooned and spent five years in solitude, thus inspiring Daniel Defoe to write his classic novel. Today, the island is actually a national park and UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve because of the varied flora and fauna on the island. The islands 500 inhabitants are mainly sustained by fishing the local waters. This island is amazingly beautiful and undoubtedly will inspire any visitor to wish they were stranded on this emerald isle.
An hour and a half flight from Papeete, rectangular-shaped Fakarava is a charming village, home to most of the atoll's 248 inhabitants. The only other - sort of - settlement (10 people ) is on Tetamanu Motu Islet located opposite the lagoon next to the smaller but prettier pass. The Bering Sea is a body of water in the Pacific Ocean that comprises a deep water basin, which then rises through a narrow slope into the shallower water above the continental shelves. The Bering Sea is separated from the Gulf of Alaska by the Alaska Peninsula. Fishing is a must in this region plentiful with fish, king and snow crab, octopus, and prawns. Off the coast of Alaska wildlife can be seen such as, eagles, whales, seals, and sea lions.
Dutch Harbour is a port in the Aleutian Islands. Geologically, the archipelago is a continuation of the Aleutian Range, which is on the Alaskan mainland, and contains a number of volcanic peaks. Few trees, all of stunted growth, are found, but grasses grow in abundance. Although a few good harbours are found in the archipelago, navigation is dangerous because of almost perpetual fog and numerous reefs.
Seventy-five miles long and covering over 1,350 square miles in area, the Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier in North America. It is also one of the most impressive, a 300-foot wall of ice rising sheer and jagged from the ocean. You may hear the rumble and see the monumental splash as the glacier breaks off in great ice chunks, known as "calves."
