Welcome to Rethymnon (Rethimno), the small Mediterranean town with its Renaissance architecture, Venetian fortress, museums and beaches. We are sure that like thousands of others, you will find so much to enchant you that you will return annually to Rethymnon.

As for the surrounding province, the difficulty is in deciding what to visit first. The endless beaches, the monasteries and the churches, the ancient sites or the Venetian and Turkish monuments? The area is rich in characteristic villages and areas of great natural beauty, as well as caves and soaring mountains. Of course we cannot forget the local people, famous for their hospitality, who will befriend you and may even share a glass of "raki" with you.

If you arrive in this magical place with anxiety and stress the atmosphere and life is enough to make you quickly forget your worries.

Originally named Kalè polis, meaning "Beautiful City", by ancient Greek mariners, Gallipoli's Old Town with its labyrinth of winding lanes emerges from the Ionian Sea and is connected to mainland modern Gallipoli via a 17th-century bridge. It is a land of farms, castles, works of art, myths and legends. Many heroic battles were fought here. In addition to its tumultuous history and natural beauty, the city’s claim to fame rests in art treasures, most notably, the Basilica of Sant’Agata which contains a rich, important art collection with numerous works by its great native son, Giovanni Andrea Coppola. Other noteworthy churches include the little church Della Puritá, San Francesco with the famous Christ and the Two Thieves by Vespasiano, Santa Chiara and San Domenico. Among other outstanding monuments are the Hellenic Fountain and the Angevin Castle. As a popular seaside resort, Gallipoli boasts unpolluted waters and sandy beaches. From here many start their travels into the delightful, unspoiled interior of the Salento region.

Sicilia is the favorite island of Gods in traditional poetry. The most powerful and biggest ancient city in Sicilia is Siracusa. Its name may come from the native word "Siraco", which means "marsh", due to the bogs which surrounded the city. Or it may derive from a Phenician etymology signifying the presence of seagulls on its rocky shores. Few cities of the ancient world had the importance Syracuse had in Magna Grecia, the ancient Greek settlements in Italy. The most spectacular monuments in the archeological area surrounded by colorful Mediterranean vegetation are the Greek amphitheatre and the Orecchio di Dionisio (Dionysius' Ear). Besides touring the Archeological Museum that contains beautiful objects, Ortigia Island, the heart of the old Greek city, is worth a visit. Outside the city limits is Eurialo Castle, an incredible structure built to protect the city from the Cathaginians, and Pantalica, the great rocky necropolis in Anapo Valley.

Pantelleria

7:00 PM

Rugged and scenic, Pantelleria is a small island off the coast to Sicily, and the southernmost island in Europe. On clear days, of which there are many, you may catch sight of the distant outline of Africa's shores. The Lago di Venere is worth a visit; its intense, otherworldly blue color is due to its volcanic origination, and nearby, you can take a dip in a thermal spring that faces the sea. Search closely, and you may also find a small "sauna" created naturally by an enclosure in the hill. Mounds of stone blocks from the Neolithic age near Mursia are remains of old earthen tombs, called sesi. For spectacular views, ascend Montagna Grande, with a trunk-like rock formation that leads down to the town of Tracino. Boating, seeing marine caves, hiking and walking through vineyards are also wonderful ways to spend your day at Pantelleria. Architecture is very similar to other Mediterranean cities, particularly Greece with its white-washed homes.

Cast in the Tyrrhenian sea, the Lipari Islands experience an increasing amount of tourism due to unusual scenery and mild climate. The variety and beauty of rock formations, the volcanic phenomena of Stromboli and the crystalline waters always impress visitors. Local-style architecture adds charm to picturesque villages. The main islands include famous Stromboli and Lipari. In a bay on Lipari’s east coast lies the main town of the same name - dominated by the Castello or Acropolis, which separates the town’s two harbors. Within Castello are the cathedral and the former Bishop's Palace, which now houses the Archaeological Museum. It is noted for its fine collection of relics from recent excavations, Greek masks and statuettes from theatrical life as far back as Sophocles and Euripides. At Marina Corta there are hydrofoils and boats offering trips to neighboring islands. The most southern Lipari Island, Vulcano Island, has a spectacular volcanic landscape of rugged peaks rising above beaches. A steep trail leads up from the plain to a 1,150-foot crater.

Alghero is the tourist capital of the so-called Coral Riviera. Its Spanish heritage is reflected in many buildings, including the church of San Francesco and the towers and bastions remaining from Spanish fortifications. With its 22 impressive columns, the Church is an outstanding example of Catalan-Gothic architecture. Grottoes and caves attract the adventurous visitor; fishing boats and pleasure craft crowd the colorful harbor; and the crystalline sea is ideal for coral and lobster fishing. Old Town is the site of seven defensive towers that dominate the walls surrounding Alghero. One of the most prominent is Porta Terra, known also as Jewish Tower. At Via Umberto stands Alghero’s 16th-century cathedral. One of the finest examples of Alghero’s Catalan-Gothic architecture is Palazzo d’Albi on Piazza Civica. Nearby stands the elegantly austere palace Palaua Reial. Two-story massive stone towers of Nuraghe Palmavera are characteristic of the island’s numerous prehistoric settlements.

Bastia

Bastia’s industrial sprawl is offset by its aged charm. The presence of overwhelming Italian character adds to the city’s attraction. Two distinct areas comprise the city: Terra Vecchia, the old quarter with its haphazard streets and flamboyant Baroque churches, and the more orderly Terra Nova, representing the administrative core of old Bastia. The city’s origin can be traced to a settlement established by the Romans just south of Bastia. The Genoese put this port on the map as the island’s capital for four centuries and a base from where local wine was shipped to the Italian mainland. They built a fortress, or bastiglia, from which the town took its name. The Genoese laid the foundation for the area’s prosperity, which it has managed to retain.

Alicante is located on Spain’s Costa Blanca in the Levant Region, along the country’s southeastern coast and is a tourist resort and commercial port. The region is marked by lush mountain ranges. During the Gothic era of the fifteenth through sixteenth centuries centuries, art and architecture flourished in Alicante and the remainder of the Levant Region. Immense palaces and grandiose churches were built with elaborate baroque details. Visitors can see a third century BC fortress - the citadel of Santa Bárbara built by ruler Amilcar Barca, a Carthaginian, Arrabal Roig - the old quarter, the Baroque town hall (1701-60), the Church of Santa María (14th century), and the Renaissance church of San Nicolás de Bari (18th century).
