Begram
Overview
Introduction
This out-of-the-way place was once known as
Kapissa, capital of the Kushan (Indo-Greek) kings. Sights include the remains of a fort built by Alexander the Great. A number of other sites are waiting to be excavated. It's now home to the largest U.S. air base in Afghanistan, including a now-notorious detention facility for al-Qaida suspects.
20 mi/30 km north of Kabul.
